Engaged Signal !

Hi,

I have installed the SIP SERVER software a while ago and its been working well for about a month or so, with two phones - One on the WAN site and anther on the local LAN.

I have now decided to add a second phone on the LAN side, but am hitting problems. The new device is a GRANDSTREAM HANDYTONE-286(The same kind of device in use on the WAN side). When I first plug it in, it works fine, I can call to and from the device.

However, after a couple of hours, the device stops accepting calls (all callers get is the engaged tone). The device can still make calls, but not recieve any. It is still registered in the ondo database. The only way I have to solve it is to reboot the device, which isn't ideal, as you have no way of knowing when it need a reboot !

Please can anyone help, as this problem is driving me mad !

Thanks, Paul.

Did you capture packets using Ethereal?
Did you see any error response from the phone?

I have installed that software using the WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE, but there is no exe file to run. I have read the documentation, but I still can't work out how to get the thing running !

Did you download it from http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/win32/ ?

Yeah, the one on that page called "WinPcap_3_0.exe", but I couldn't get any sort of user interface at all (DOS or GUI) !

Did you also download ethereal-setup-0.10.6.exe as described in the page...?

Yeah, I worked out that was my problem this morning.

However, even with that downloaded and installed, I can get up the interface, but I still can't capture any packets !

Ok, I've finnaly managed to get Ethereal working and capturing packets.

It appears that when I get the engaged tone, the phone is not reponding...

Its a strange one as it works fine one min, then fails and works fine again later on.

Do you think this is a hardware problem, or something to do with the software ?

The phone is always registered in ONDO SIP SERVER, but when I try to call it, I get a "REORDER" error on the LCD screen on my cisco phone.

Are there no responses come from the phone after receiving INVITE requests at all when you get the engaged tone?

I don't think there is any responce from the phone, but that Ethereal is about as temperemental as the phone in question itself !

Am I support to be filtering my search results ? I doesn't ever seam to capture any thing with the SIP protocol, but it does sometimes call the IP addresses on the phones in question.

I've checked the LOG within the web admin tool of ONDO SIP SERVER, and when the call fails with the REORDER error, there is no sign of it ever taking place (no error or anything in the log).

This is becomming very frustrating now !

If you don't see any SIP packets when capturing on OnDO SIP Server, it seems no call requests have arrived at OnDO SIP Server.

Does the Grandstream phone inside fail to receive a call only when you tried to call from outside? or does it fail even in local?

I've only tried to call that extention from phones inside my LAN.

It seams VERY intermitted. One minute its working fine, then the next it isn't !

I've tried changing the telephone number assigned to the phone and the network cable, but still no luck.

When I get the error, I can still ping the phone from my PC and the machine running as the SIP SERVER. I can also connect to it via IE and get access to the config page.

I really can't see what could be wrong with it !!

Did this problem happen only when you call grandstream?
Can you capture packets at OSS using Ethereal?
If a phone is not responding at all, the problem may be in the phone. Upgrading the phone's firmware might solve the problem.

Ok,

I'm really at the end of the line now with this, so I am going to post the results from Ethereal...

The logs from when the phone works can be found here: http://www.tyreman.net/other/Working.jpg

And the logs from when the phone is not working can be found here: http://www.tyreman.net/other/NotWorking.jpg

Hope someone can help.

Thanks, Paul.

From http://www.tyreman.net/other/NotWorking.jpg , it seems you set authentication = on for INVITE and the authentication has failed.

Please check if you have entered user/password information in [Authentication] menu of OnDO SIP Server and if you set the same user/password at your phone.

Yeah, I have set authentication = on for INVITE, as I don't want just anyone registering a phone on my server.

Why do you think it would authenticate fine and then loose that authentication after being on for a while ?

On your advice, I have deleted the phones details from ONDO SIP SERVER and recreated it. I have also reloaded the latest firmware to the phone, and have re-entered the authentication details into the phone.

I'll post back and let you know how I get on...

If this is still a problem, would setting authentication = off for INVITE help and how would this impact on system security ?

Thanks again,
Paul.

Well I have just tried the phone again and its not working !!

I've managed to find an older version of the firmware, so have down graded to that.

I'll let you know if that helps tomorrow.

Paul.

Still not working, even with the old Firmware.

Am I going to have to turn the authentication on invite off ?

No, many people are using Grandstream phone with OSS authentication.
Do you still find "603 Decline" in packets?

Please make sure followings again.
1)Did you enter Authenticate ID/Password at your phone and are they same as user/password in [Authentication]menu of OSS?
2)Is [Config]->[SIP(General)]->[Adopt auth-username as "To:"] = yes? If so, SIP User ID should be same as Authentication ID at your phone. If "no", SIP User ID can be different from Authentication ID.

When I set [Config]->[SIP(General)]->[Adopt auth-username as "To:"] = yes (Before it was NO), all calls are rejected.

However, at the phone the user ID and the authentication ID are both the same and they are equal to the phones extention nubmber, so I can't see why all calls are being blocked with that arrangement !?

In answer to point one above, the details at the SERVER side are defanatly entered the same as at the phone side. This has to be the case, as it accepts calls when initialy powered up (and I have check it many times).

Sorry, [Config]->[SIP(General)]->[Adopt auth-username as "To:"] = yes doesn't work for INVITE authentication now.
We'll fix it soon.

Please set it to "no". Invite authentication should work with the setting.

"Invite authentication should work with the setting."

Well on this phone it isn't !

I think the only way forward is going to be for me to turn INVITE authentication off for now, but that is going to mean that anyone with an IP phone and the name of my server can make unsolisited calls to the people who legitamatly use my server !

I am going to have to assume that its a hardware fault, since when I set INVITE authentication = off, I get a 603 error !

Do you think this is the case ? I think it must be as I don't have any problems with another phone of exactly the same spec.

Do you mean 603 is issued from the phone? Or is OSS returning the error?

Ethereal loged this error against the phones IP address: "STATUS: 603 DECLINE".

So I guess its the phone which is returning the error.

I have e-mailed the company who I bough the phone from and they said to return it to them for inspection, so thats what I'm going to do.

Thanks for your help in trying to solve this problem.

Paul.
